Experience Sweeping Views from the Empire State Building
If you are planning a trip to New York City, one of the must-see attractions you should add to your bucket list is the famous Empire State Building. A city and national historic landmark, the building rises more than a quarter of a mile above Manhattan. Visitors can enjoy a panoramic, awe-inspiring view of the heart of the city beneath them from the 86th Floor Observation Deck.
Stop by the Sustainability Exhibit
Before you reach the elevators on the second floor is the Sustainability Exhibit, which features the building's groundbreaking initiatives for sustainability. In 2009, the building began a sustainability retrofit to reduce energy costs and carbon emissions. Over the next 15 years, it is expected that the building can reduce energy costs by $4.4 million yearly, reduce energy usage by 38 percent and reduce carbon emissions by 105,000 metric tons. In an effort to educate visitors, the exhibit was created to showcase the technology that went into the process. Be sure to check out the sculptures, building materials and digital displays that tell the story of the renovation process.
Visit Day or Night for Sweeping Views of the City
Day or night, the observatory can provide the perfect view of the city. If you enjoy city lights and the sounds of live jazz, visiting the observatory at night is the perfect option. There is often a saxophonist or other performers who play live classic music on the 86th floor on select evenings. After you have had your fill of the sweeping city view, you can go down to the 33rd floor and visit the art-deco style Empire Room lounge.
The open-air deck provides a 360-degree view of the city and beyond, including views of the Hudson River, Brooklyn Bridge, Statue of Liberty, Central Park, Times Square, the East River and more. You can also take advantage of binoculars for a closer look and use the handheld multi-media device to view the city from every direction.
Explore the Dare to Dream Exhibit
Before ascending to the 86th floor, stop by the Dare to Dream exhibit located on the 80th floor. This exhibit features the story of the American dream and captures the engineering, history and construction of the building. This exhibit pays tribute to more than 3,400 builders, architects and laborers that made the world's most famous office building a possibility. Here you can view original documents of the architectural sketches, daily bookkeeping, period photographs and other construction notes and mementos.
